Doves to Woodpeckers

Rock Dove/Feral Pigeon Columbia livia - Very common and widespread, but although some were obviously feral many flocks appeared like wild Rock Doves.

Woodpigeon Columba palumbus - Two single birds, one at Birecik and the other not far away from there.

Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto - Abundant in most places. A small and very dark individual, presumably this species or perhaps an escaped congener, was among normal birds at Atatürk Barajı.

Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur - A total of 10-11 birds seen or heard including 4-5 at Durnalık.

Laughing Dove (Palm Dove) Streptopelia senegalensis - Small numbers at several towns and villages between Anamur and Şanliurfa, including at least 8 at Sanliurfa.

Ring-necked Parakeet (Rose-ringed Parakeet) Psittacula krameri - 2 Parakeets, apparently this species, were seen briefly in Şanliurfa.

Cuckoo Cuculus canorus - Seen or heard at 4 sites.

Scops Owl Otus scops - Single birds heard calling from the places we were staying at Karadut (Nemrut Dağı) and Güzelyurt.

Striated Scops Owl (Pallid Scops Owl, Bruce's Scops Owl) Otus brucei - One in the Gülhane Tea Gardens at Birecik. It was quickly found for us by the proprietor and then re-found by him after it moved.

Little Owl Athene noctua - Expecting the Little Owls here to belong to one of the paler Middle Eastern races I was surprised to find the first example at Göksu Delta was much darker than ours, presumably a melanistic bird. More in line with expectations, a pale bird was between Uzuncaburç and Demircili and another was seen very briefly between Güzelyurt and Göreme.

Alpine Swift Apus melba - About 30 in total, seen at Cendere Köprüsü (just outside Nemrut Dağı Milli Parkı), Demirkazik, Ihlara Valley and Göreme.

Swift (Common Swift) Apus apus - Common in most areas - small numbers seen nearly every day. No Pallid Swifts Apus pallidus were identified and most were certainly Common.

Little Swift Apus affinis - Two between Silifke and Demircili were a surprise. I expected to see this species at Birecik but didn't, however I didn't spend time specifically looking for them there.

Pied Kingfisher Ceryle rudis - One was fishing the gravel pits on the north side of Birecik.

Bee-eater Merops apiaster - The largest numbers were at Göksu Delta, although the biggest single flocks were along the road before we got there. Smaller numbers elsewhere including Birecik and Atatürk Barajı. Sadly no Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters Merops persicus were found - they don't seem to be present at Birecik any longer.

Middle Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos medius - 1 seen well at Akseki.
