White-throated Robin

This is the second section of the trip report and contains details and photos of the birds and wildlife seen. This section spans several pages: this is the last one; an index is here.

Butterflies and Moths

I don't have any books covering Turkish butterflies although most species also occur in Europe. Consequently I wasn't at all sure about some of the IDs and even those I think I've identified might not be correct! I'm grateful to those who've helped with the IDs, especially Prof Dr Zeynel Cebeci. Please get in touch if you can identify any of the rest (mainly the Browns left now)!

With a few exceptions records mostly relate to those butterflies I was able to photograph. My priority for this trip was birds so I didn't pay enough attention to butterflies to be able to make sensible comments about their status. I was also a bit slack in recording the ones I did identify so I'm relying on memory a bit where there weren't any photos.

Swallowtail Papilio machaon - 1 photographed (badly) at Kanlidıvane.

Scarce Swallowtail Iphiclides podalirius - A pale stripey swallowtail seen in flight was presumably this species (no photos).

Black-veined White Aporia crataegi - A huge concentration of these in a tiny area at Nemrut Dagi.

Large White Pieris brasicae - At least at Ihlara Valley.

Eastern Orange-tip Anthocharis damone - A yellow orange-tip seen in flight at, I think, Uzuncaburç was presumably this species, unless there are any others I don't know about.

Berger's Clouded Yellow Colias alfacariensis - One location (I can't recall where) held fair numbers of Clouded Yellows all of which were pale. No photos so I didn't expect an ID, but it looks like Pale Clouded Yellow doesn't range here and I'm not sure there's anything else they're likely to have been.

Clouded Yellow Colias crocea - Clouded Yellows that resembled this species, at least to the untrained eye, were common at one or two places.

Cleopatra Gonepteryx cleopatra - Pretty sure I saw one in flight.

Gerhard's Black Hairstreak Satyrium abdominalis - Many thanks to Prof Dr Zeynel Cebeci for the ID of this individual photographed at Nemrut Dağı.

Grayling sp. Pseudochazara sp. - Not sure which species these belong to but they closely resemble European species in this genus. Maybe Pseudochazara telephassa? False Grayling Arethusana arethusa has been suggested but it's quite different from the ones in the field guides so I'm seeking clarification on that one.

Brown sp. - The first one here looks like it might be some kind of Meadow Brown but I'm not sure about that. Another similar individual was photographed at Kanlidıvane. The second one could be a Small Heath perhaps?
