2 Satemwa Tea Estate (Thyolo) 30th, 2 Dzalanyama 1st and 30+ Nyika 5th.

 

Lesser Seedcracker Pyrenestes minor [1]

1 Dzalanyama 2nd. This species ranges in a relatively small area of SE Africa and is not easily found in Malawi, so I was particularly pleased to bump into one.

Blue Waxbill (Blue-breasted Cordonbleu, Southern Cordonbleu) Uraeginthus angolensis [69]

4 Malosa 23rd; up to 25 Liwonde 23rd-25th (involving perhaps 40 birds in all), 1 between Rumphi and Vwaza 3rd, 10+ Vwaza Marsh, 4 between Vwaza and Nyika and 1 Nyika 4th, 4 between Nyika and Rumphi 7th, 3 Bird & Hippo Sanctuary (Senga Bay) 9th and 2 Cool Runnings (Senga Bay) 10th.

These are often regarded as a race of Black-and-white Mannikin. 4 Malosa 23rd, 3 Zomba Forest Lodge 27th, up to at least 6 Lujeri Guest House (Mulanje) 28th-29th, up to 10 Satemwa Guest House (Thyolo) 29th-30th, 2 Dzalanyama 2nd and 2+ Makuzi 8th.

Up to 10 Nyika 4th-6th. These are sometimes regarded as a race of Cape Canary Serinus canicollis.

1 Ku Chawe (Zomba Plateau) 27th, 1 Satemwa Tea Estate (Thyolo) 29th and 4 Nyika 7th. This species was formerly regarded as a race of African Citril Serinus citrinelloides .

1 Lilongwe 22nd, up to 6 Liwonde 23rd-25th, up to 8 Lujeri Guest House (Mulanje) 28th-29th, 4 Satemwa Guest House (Thyolo) 29th and 10 Vwaza Marsh and 4 between Vwaza and Nyika 4th. Can anyone explain why this species was ever called Yellow-eyed Canary?

Brimstone Canary (Bully Canary) Serinus sulphuratus [4]

2 Dzalanyama 2nd, 1 Nyika 7th and 1 Lilongwe Airport 10th. The birds at Dzalanyama and Lilongwe would have belonged to the race shelleyi whilst the one at Nyika was probably the larger race frommi.
