NEW WORLD WARBLERS, SPARROWS and BLACKBIRDS

Orange-crowned Warbler Vermivora celata

Van – 2 MacDonald Road, Vancouver Airport 7th, 1 Iona Beach 7th, 1 Ladner Harbour Park 8th, 10 Boundary Bay 9th.

VI – 3 Island View Beach 10th, 2 Swan Lake, Victoria 12th, 8 Island View Beach 13th.

Orange-crowned Warbler, Boundary Bay, 9-Sep-06 Orange-crowned Warbler, Boundary Bay, 9-Sep-06

Orange-crowned Warbler, Boundary Bay, 9th September 2006. I hadn't realised how grey-headed autumn Orange-crowned Warblers could get but I saw several similar birds (including the one below) so it's presumably fairly normal.

Yellow Warbler Dendroica petechia

Van – 4 MacDonald Road, Vancouver Airport 7th, 2 Iona Beach 7th, 1 Westham Island 8th, 1 Reifel 8th, 1 Boundary Bay 8th, 5 Boundary Bay 9th.

VI – 2 Island View Beach 10th & 13th, 3 Swan Lake, Victoria 13th.

Yellow Warbler, Reifel, 8-Sep-06 Yellow Warbler, Reifel, 8-Sep-06
Yellow Warbler, Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, 8th September 2006

Myrtle Warbler Dendroica (coronata) coronata

Int – 1 near Revelstoke 15th, 2 Vaseux Lake 19th. These individuals lacked any hint of yellow or buff on the throat and the whitish throat curved round towards the rear of the ear-coverts. Other features separating the eastern and western forms of Yellow-rumped Warbler were not checked however and with intergrades apparently common in British Columbia the identification of these as Myrtle Warbler should perhaps be regarded as tentative.

Audubon's Warbler Dendroica (coronata) auduboni

Van – Unidentified Yellow-rumped Warblers: 1 Ladner Harbour Park 8th, 2 Boundary Bay 9th.

VI – 1 unidentified Yellow-rumped Warbler Rathrevor Park 11th, 8 Audubon's Warblers Island View Beach 13th.

Int – Total of 56 Yellow-rumped Warblers including 42 identified as Audubon's and 11 left unidentified. Best count 12 Panorama Road, Invermere 18th.

Audubon's Warbler, Island View Beach, 13th September 2006

Yellow-rumped Warbler, Wilmer Bird Sanctuary, 17th September 2006. Same bird as below.

Audubon's Warbler, Wilmer Bird Sanctuary, 17-Sep-06 Audubon's Warbler, Wilmer Bird Sanctuary, 17-Sep-06

Yellow-rumped Warbler, Wilmer Bird Sanctuary, 17th September 2006. The throat is mostly white suggesting Myrtle Warbler but there is a diffuse yellowy-buff patch at the bottom of the throat and the head pattern is more akin to Audubon's Warbler. The pale at the sides of the throat begins to curl back below the ear-coverts but I don't think it does so as clearly as on some Myrtle Warblers. Not sure if this is within the range of variation for Audubon's or if it's an intergrade.
