Vevlet Scoter Melanitta fusca
Small numbers winter off the coast of Norfolk but they are more numerous further north.
Inland in Norfolk they are very rare so it was a great surprise to find this fine drake at Wroxham Broad one evening. Unfortunately it was nearly dark and the unadjusted photos were all-black - some extreme photoshopping has just about managed to bring out a recognisable form...

The North American and east Asian forms of Velvet Scoter, known as White-winged Scoter, have been recently split as separate species.
