Sociable Plover (Sociable Lapwing) Vanellus gregarius
An increasingly rare visitor to western Europe. There were several records in the 80s and 90s including some in Norfolk, but as the species declines throughout its native range extralimital records have become even more exceptional. Most records were among Lapwing flocks in autumn (September and October) but one lovely breeding plumaged bird turned up in north Norfolk in the early 90s. Beware of leucistic Lapwings - quite a few claims of Sociable Plover have turned out to be aberrant Lapwings!
