Baillon's Crake Porzana pusilla

Normally an extremely rare vagrant to the UK but in 2012 several were heard calling by surveyors listening for Spotted Crakes. Few birders got to see any of these but in the autumn the young bird shown below was discovered at Rainham Marshes and was seen by over 2000 admirers. Some spent hours there with nothing more than a brief glimpse but on the morning I visited we were treated to some fantastic views. Unfortunately the sun was directly behind it so photographing it was a real challenge!
